How You Like Me Now

‘So what, if anything, do you like or dislike about NUS?’

Hmm…

did you know NUS is french for 'nude'? Go figure.

Looking back, I realise I had kept my academic life separate from my social life in the earlier periods of my freshmen years. Yea I wasn’t made to wear any school attire, nor did I have any rigid school hours as before BUT coming off the back of a rather strict and conformative period of my teenage years (JC + NS), I wasn’t comfortable with the idea of letting loose in an institution (dang i realise campus = camp + us). I remember when I didnt want to hang out in school any longer than I had to because I wanted to GET ON with my life. On hindsight, this is a rather absurb notion. If I could turn back the suns to when I was in my first lecture in Engin (which I highly suspect was a horrible 8 AM MA1506), I would have told myself three things:

  1. Do not FUCK UP your 1st year
  2. Have a GO at something in NUS
  3. STAY AWAY from the Japanese Food at Techno Edge

eat jap food and BE on the edge

Hey that was almost 3 years ago. The old Japanese food no longer haunts Engin freshmen (they now haunt Arts freshmen); I’m looking to spruce up my non-academic profile and I DID  screw up my 1st year. Well, I am trying to be more badass academically (I hope Alan will attest to that) but I know what I’m cut out for and not. I’m coming to the end of my 3rd year and I’ve another year to go before I’ve to earn my keeps. I know it won’t be as smooth or pleasant for me as it’ll be for my peers (you know I’m talking about you), but that only means I’ve got to double it up.  That means I’ve got to pull up my socks and Batman for it.

but even Batman knows when to say 'Fuck No'

There would be no moment of magic from Henry to spur a win for arsenal after all. I know the King is not going to do a ‘Leeds’ in every game he plays, but it’s eays to be a romantic – who doesn’t love a fairytale? I think Wenger knows better than to let him play longer periods in the game. Letting him come on as a late subtitute allows him to balance those sparks of brillance with periods of dull. I sure hope he has scripted a special part for himself next week. It’s game on!

Speaking of hope, I wonder what any praying really does. We’d like to think that our praying begets good fortune upon ourselves or others, just as how misfortunes are a result of us saying something to tempt fate. If this scenario holds true, it would look like many of us believe in a little thing called ’cause and effect’.

I believe that tight leather suits lead to popping cleavage

So, if my prayers were to go unasnwered and I was led to an undesired outcome, who is to say that my prayers weren’t a cause of that? We only believe in praying when it works out for the better, and when it doesn’t, we’ll think that we’re just set for an alternative route for no better or worse. Really? What’s all the praying for then? I’d like to think that there are ways to alleviate your situation and ALSO fill up that void of uncertainty within yourself. Praying only fulfills the latter.

The second week of school is dragging its saggy ass way to the Chinese New Year, and all thanks to my reasonable and human lecturer, he’s letting us off for the lecture on the wednesday. H to the URRAY for a Long Weekend, though I’m very much enjoying regular long weekends due to my Monday Free Day (it looks like typing the first letter of the word in CAPS makes the phrase appear more official). I’ve only got two horrible days starting off at 9 am, and I dont see any incentive at doing so. It’s just a bitch to get anywhere in the morning, be it by public or private. ‘Flying Cars’ couldn’t come sooner.

dang writing it in caps DOES make it official

The gap between you and the public is much smaller now than it was years ago. WordPress looks more eager for you to post fresh literacy than the Old Blogger did; on twitter and facebook, you’re only a few words and ‘Enter’ away from making your thoughts public. The lack of a filter or personal censorship looks to deny people the need to spare a thought for a little thing called ‘accountability’. Many a times I had wanted to write a little something on my old Blog, but the red tape of having to log in -> wait -> type -> review -> wait -> publish made me think twice. Now, the new wordpress interface is just WAITING for me to speak. I shall oblige – with trepidation.

you can't make gold out of garbage everytime

Importing from my old Blog only took minutes, but on hindsight, that is worth almost 6 years of memories. More so, it’s 6 years of my teenage life – an equivalent of my JC + NS + UNI years thus far. In that period of time, I’ve been to Japan; acquired my own two-wheeler; reap the benefits of a heterosexual relationship and have had MANY MANY subway sandwiches.

mind you, this is only a fraction

Another year so to go before I’m a working adult – and I’ve to make my regular contributions to the family and gahmen. I would like to think it’ll be smooth sailing, but only I can assure that of myself. About this time next year, we’ll probably be planning our much spoken-of pilgramage to Land of the Rising Sun. This time, we’ll truly find those NSFW vending machines. I look forward to a pleasant semester at school and I do hope to obtain an internship stint over the summer holidays. The future sure holds lots of uncertainty, but I’m going to soldier on.

Unless you’re Batman of course. Then it sure doesn’t matter what your future holds.

Hope It’s Chocolate FOR ME!

I love watching stand up comedy. It all boils down to your engagement of the audience and the manner of your verbal and visual delivery. I must say it is a very effective manner of presentation, but also very difficult to master. I realise excellent stand-up comedians are able to seamlessly blend both their stage material with visual cues to draw the audience’s attention and engage them to the fullest. As an example, I shall share a clip which is one my favourites.  It is a short clip about cake, enjoy!

Family Culture

In the midst of replying blog posts, I just remembered about this sitcom that unravels 3 different family units and their interaction and hilarious communication breakdowns. I particularly adore the gay couple in the show, as they are usually very flamboyant and it is interesting to see a gay family coexist. Below is a short clip from the show on how communication differs amongst the 3 families. Enjoy!
